For the 2nd year in a row, Pizza Time is the Playoff champion of the Hudson Valley Senior Softball league defeating regular season champion Arlington Grill by the score of 18 - 7 at sunny Digilio field. Here are my observations after watching the whole game:

Pizza Time had a fast start with 2 home runs in the 1st inning to take a 3 - 0 lead but Arlington Grill fought back with a run in the bottom of the first and 2 runs in the 2nd inning to tie the game up. After a controversial call at first base which went against Pizza Time in the 3rd, they then went on to score 5 runs with big RBI hits from Rod Whitby, Stan Smilkstein, Mike Lynch and Chris Edwards. Each team traded runs in the 4th and 5th innings with the score 9 - 4 going into the 6th.  This is the inning that turned the game in my opinion, the first 2 guys got on base due to an error and another ball in the outfield which should have been caught and then with the bottom of the order coming up, Pizza Time was able to get 3 runs to take a 12 - 4 lead. In the bottom of the inning Arlington Grill had an opportunity to get back in the game but left the base loaded with 2 outs. Pizza Time essentially iced the game in the top of the 7th with a 5 run inning with big RBI hits from Stan Smilkstein, Mike Lynch, Phil Chontos and capped off by a 2 run home run from Chris Edwards. Arlington Grill fought back in the bottom of the inning with 3 runs but again left the bases loaded with 2 outs. Pizza Time added a run in the top of the 8th and Arlington went down 1 - 2 - 3 in the bottom half to end the game. I was particularly impressed by the Pizza Time defense with special mention going to Rod Whitby's work at Shortstop, Mark Giralamo's play in LF, Phil Chontos pitched a terrific game and last but not least Joe DeMaria made two tough catches in RF, one to start the game and one to end the game. I don't have the Arlington Grill scoresheet but Joe Barbarito had a very good game for them with 3 hits and 2 RBI's. Tommy Mirande had 2 hits along with Doug McCracken, Gerry Korey and Carl Villegas. Offensively Pizza Time was led by Stan Smilkstein who was 4 for 4 with 4 RBI's, Rod Whitby had 3 hits with 2 RBI's, Mike Lynch had 3 hits including a home run and 4 RBI's, Phil Chontos had 3 hits along with being the winning pitcher and Chris Edwards also had 3 hits one of which was a home run and 4 RBI's. John Deegan also chipped in with 3 hits while Mark Giralamo had 2 hits with a home run, Ben Anker had 2 hits and Joe DeMaria had 2 hits, 2 RBI's and played outstanding defense in right field.

Doyle's took another lead scoring 3 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th but Arlington responded with a 5 run bottom of the 7th to retake the lead 11 - 10. Doyle's bounced back again with a 2 run 8th inning but Arlington responded again with 1 run in the bottom of the 8th to send the game into extra innings.  Neither team scored until the bottom of the 10th when with 2 outs Arlington loaded the bases and Joe Barbarito hit a single into right center field for the walkoff win.
