Mountain View Ranch 11 - J&N 9
Bill Hanchett had 3 hits, all doubles.
It was a sad day in Mudville as J&N was defeated by Mountain View Ranch, at Digilio, by the score of 11-9 and now we are out of the playoffs. Mountain View started out by scoring 4 unanswered runs in the first inning. J&N scored 3 in the second and tied things up in the fourth. The game was never out of reach, but J&N could never quite put it together. Our pitcher, Joe DiChiara, obviously kept it close but the offense could never get out of its own way. We hit, we caught a few balls, and we ran. We ran into a few outs. We tried.
It was an honor and a lot of fun to play with my teammates. We helped each other out and supported each other. We became friends and I feel that we will be friends for years to come. Hitting stars for J&N: Mark Battistoni 3/3, 2 doubles, 3 runs; George Hammer 3/4, rbi;
Paul Morales, Tony Scaduto, Jeff Noe, Steve Savod, Mike Spinelli 2, and Bill Volpe all had 2 hits. George, Jaime, Paul, Stan, Tony and Steve had an rbi or two.
Mchoul's 29 - Miller's 10
McHoul's soundly defeated a depleted Miller's team by a score of 29-10. Miller's was missing 4 of their regular players but they put up a valiant fight in the 1st round of playoffs. For McHoul's: Emil Viola, Jim Kirzoncic and Frank Goberish hit five for five, accounting for 10 runs. Right behind their performance was Mike Healy, Winning Pitcher Phil Chontos, Dave Lowitz and Louie Rosenberg with 4 hits apiece. Carey Wasserberg, Gary DiMaggio and Russ Gilmore provided 3 hits each with Paulie Lastowski and Tony Dalia providing 2 hits each. An all-around great defense by McHoul's.
Pizza Time 19 - Doyle's 16
A game that saw Doyle's hold a 2-0 record against Pizza Time during the regular season and out score them 34 to 22, a12 run difference. Pizza Time, the underdog went 3 up and 3 down in the first inning. Doyle's high-powered offense was shut down in the bottom of the first, because PT went with a defensive strategy that stymied the powerful hitters of Doyle's, mixed in with great defensive plays. The defensive strategy was suggested by one of the senior players on our team, Ray "Ted Williams" Smith, against popular beliefs from a couple teammates. It worked, the big hitters of Doyle's were hitting long fly balls, but the bottom half of their team carried the offense. Well, the scoring started in the top of the 2 inning. With two outs, Ray Smith lined a single, then Charlie"Willie Randolph" Melia lined a shot down the left field line. Then Donnie "Roy White" Black drove in the run with a line drive to right field, giving PT a 1-0 lead. Again, PT defense stepped up and shut D's offense down. The top of the 3rd inning saw PT come to life by pushing 5 runs in by clutch hits from Bert "Cy Young" Keating, Roger "Chuck Conners" Simon's triple, and Joe "Brett Gardner" Wassweiler's 3 run blast, giving PT a 6-0 lead, But the bottom of the 3rd saw D's bottom of the lineup put hits together and score 4, closing PT's lead to 6-4. In the top of the 4th inning, PT would put a single run on the board, making it 7-4. But Doyle's came right back and scored 2 cutting the lead to 1 run, 7-6 The 5th inning started with 2 outs, then Donnie Black would single, Tony "Joe Pepitone" Navara would knock in a run, followed by Roger Simon's second extra base hit scoring the other run, giving PT a 9-6 lead. But D's offense scored 5 max, to take the lead 11-9, PT trailing by 2 heading to the top of the 6th. Never gave up and came right back with 5 max of their own, taking a 14-11 lead. Again D's came back and scored 4 runs leaving their 5th run on 3rd base, because the great defensive plays of Tom "Craig Nettles" Hotaling at 3rd base and Roger "Derek Jeter" Merritt at shortstop kept D's 5th run from scoring, giving D's a 15-14 lead. Top of the 7th inning, PT again came out swinging with a lead off hit by Ray Smith, then Charlie Melia doubled to left field driving in a run, Joe "Robinson Cano" Karam hits a smash down the right field line, scoring 2 runs. Bottom half of 7th saw D's score one run and closed the PT lead to 17-15, but in the top of the 8th, PT would have Frank "Mike Piazza" Navarra get on base for the 3rd time of the day with a walk, Then Greg " Micky Mantle" Miller would rope a triple to right field scoring Frank. With Greg on 3rd base, Joe Wassweiler would drive in a run giving him 7rbi on the day, PT 19-15. Bottom of the 8th inning saw D's lead off hitter line a double to right center that was cut off by Reggie "Roberto Clemente" Dolson. That run would come around to score... Giving Pizza Time a 19-16 win. Great defensive plays by the whole Pizza Time team kept us in the game, Plays by Roger Simon , Joe Karam, Donnie Black, Anthony Navara, Greg Miller, The last out was a great catch by Bert "Cy Young" Keating, an infield fly ball to the side of the pitching screen. Bert went around the screen and made the catch in fair territory to end the game. Bert Pitched a great game keeping the heavy hitters of Doyle's off base. Stats: Greg Miller 1-3 2runs, 1rbi [Clutch triple in the 8th], Joe Wassweiler 2-3 2runs, 7rbi's 2 home runs, Roger Merritt 2-4 1run 1rbi, Tom Hotaling 1-4 1run [hit the ball hard all day], Reggie Dolson 2-4 2runs, 2rbi, Da' Coach 1-3 1rbi, Ray Smith 1-3 2runs,1rbi [clutch hitting], Charlie Melia 2-3 1run 2rbi, Donnie Black 1-3 1run 1 rbi [key hit], Joe Karam 2-3 2runs, 2rbi, Anthony Navara 3-3 1run 1rbi, Roger Simon 2-3 2runs, 3rbi {great all-around game!}, Bert Keating 1-3 1run 1rbi, Frank Navarra 2-2 3runs,1rbi [key walk in the 8th inning!]. On to the next round, good luck to everyone. Great game by both teams, close game all the way through a bunch of lead changes.
Pizza time beat Doyle's in a closely contested game that had five lead changes. Doyle's was led by: Al Hicks 3-4, Steve Lynch 3-3, Pete Schwarze with a 3-run home run and Joe Kupiec, Tom Giordano, Dave Andruze, and Rodney DeLoatch with 2 hits each.
