McHoul's 29 - Michael's 11

McHoul's piled on 41 hits to defeat Michael's by a score of 29 to 11. For McHoul's: Tony Dalia led the attack going 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored. Russ Gilmore and Paulie Lastowski batted 4 for 4 with 3 runs each. Additionally, Phil Chontos, Emil Viola, Jim Kirzoncic (HR), Peter Longobardi, Frank Goberish (3B), Joe Hatch, Gary DiMaggio, Lou Rosenberg and Carey Wasserberg, all contributed 3 hits each. Winning pitchers were Phil Chontos and Andy Burger, going 4 innings each.

At Whitesell Field, McHoul's ran all over Michael's 29 to 11. Stats for Michael's: Ben Anker 3-4 (2rs2rbi), Jack Baxter 3-4 (2rs3rbi), Frank McHugh 3-4 (2rbi), Eddie Smilkstein 2-3, Angelo DiGregorio 2-3, Joe Barbarito 2-4.


Pizza Time 13 - J&N 7

It was a close game that saw neither team put up 5 runs till after the fifth inning. The name of this game was defense and pitching. There were 4 double plays were turned, 3 by Pizza Time and 1 by J&N, with Great pitching by Bert "Cy Young" Keating keeping the Great hitters of J&N off balance. Pizza Time put 3 runs up on the scoreboard first, led by the great hitting of Greg "Lou Piniella" Miller who hit a single after Joe"Brett Gardner" Wassweiler hit a hard ground out that Steve Savod made a great play on. Greg would line a single, then Reggie "Roberto Clement" Dolson would hit one of his two balls out of Sports Park Jr. with runners on. Roger "Derek Jeter" Merritt would drive in Reggie. Then Tom "Brooks Robinson" Hotaling would be robbed by a great play, followed by Da Coach and Ray "Hit Man" Smith would drive in the third run in the first inning. J&N would close the door on Pizza Time over the next 2 innings with great defensive plays. J&N would score a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the rally was cut short by outstanding defense by Tom "Brooks Robinson" Hotaling and the combination of Charlie "Robinson Cano'' Melia, Roger "Derek Jeter" Merritt, Roger "Daniel Murphy" Simon {welcome back}, and Tony" Bobby Richardson" Janicik. In the 4th inning  Pizza Time's offense pushed two runs over the plate started By Tom Hotaling, a double by Da' Coach followed by  Ray "Thurman Munson" Smith's line drive that scored Tom. Then a hit by Roger Simon scored the second run of the inning giving Pizza Time a 5-1 lead over J&N. A great defensive play by Reggie "Roberto Clemente" Dolson with a running sliding catch put a stop to the J&N offense. Then in the top of the 5th inning after an OUR LADY QUEEN OF VICTORY PRAY FOR US CHEER, Pizza Time's offense came to life and scored its first 5 run inning of the game. It started with a single off the bat of Tony J's bat. Then Frank "Mike Piazza" Navarra would line out to shortstop, then with a hard shot by Joe "Brett Gardner" Wassweiler and 3 straight Doubles, two over the fence and a line drive by Tom Hotaling, Pizza Time had it 5 runs, taking a 10-2 lead over J&N. But J&N didn't lay down and came back with 5 runs of their own to tighten the score 10-7. In the 6th and 7th innings. both teams' defenses played great, shutting out Pizza Time over the next 2 innings. But in the top of the 8th inning, again, Greg "Lou Piniella" Miller collected his 4th hit on the day. He started the rally, 5 straight hits helped out and PT had 3 more runs, to make the score 13-7over J&N. In the bottom half of 8th, Donnie "Dave Winfield" Black made a catch down the right field line. Then a pop out to Tom Hotaling ended the J&N rally. Great defensive game by both teams. The Final score was Pizza Time 13-7 over J&N. J&N is a much better team than their record shows. Today’s game played at Sports Park Jr was a close one until the fifth inning, and then J&N chipped away, but not enough to break on through to the other side. George Hammer went 2 for 4, Mike Spinelli Sr went 3 for 4, Jamie Pagan went 1 for 3 with and 2 RBI’s, Mark Battastoni 2/3 with an RBI, Steve Savod 2/3 with an RBI, Stan "Oven Mitt" Silverman 2/3, Von Ahouse 1/3, Tony Scaduto 2/3, Bill Volpe 1/3, Rick Brettholz 2/3 with an RB, Mike Spinelli 1/3, Dick Michels 1/3, And Joe DiChiara 2/3 with an RBI. Oven Mitt Silverman also made an unbelievable slide into third base. He started to slide feet first and then mid-slide switched to head first. His jumbled pile of body parts was safe at third. If Marcel Marceau had seen the slide, he would have said, "Why?" Now, hurry up and print this before Chris (Mike Lupica) Edwards takes up all of the room on the website.


Miller's 15 - Arlington Grill 13

On a cold, damp morning, Miller's defeated Arlington Grill by the score of 15 to 13. This game changed hands many times. Miller's was led by John Warman with 4 hits, Lou (Mr. Consistent) Post with 3 hits. Dan Sopchack, Royal (Dewey) Bogardus and Dave (Costa Rica) Napolillo came up with big hits. If it wasn't for the great play by Arlington Grill's outfield, Miller's would have scored more runs. Another great outing by (Winning Pitcher)Mike Capra. This was a total team effort as all 13 players contributed with a hit or more.

Arlington Bar and Grill loses to Miller's 15 to 13. For the Grillers: Angelo Sblendorio had 4 hits, 2 of which were home runs. Mark Joao, Pat Towne and Drew D'Angelo all had 3 hits. Chris Thomas played great defense.


Mountain View Ranch 17 - Doyle's 9

For Mountain View Ranch: Carl Parris, John Otsuni and Steve McGee all went 4 for 4.

For Doyle's: Dan Diesing 4-4, John Latino 3-4, Tom Giordano 3-3, Rod DeLoatch 3-4.


Arlington Grill 15 - McHoul's 5

Arlington Bar and Grill defeats McHoul's 15 to 5. A complete team effort. Mike Vuozzo, Mark Joao, George Norris and Angelo Sblendorio all had 3 hits. Angelo pitched a complete game for the victory.

For McHoul's, the team performed as follows: Jim Kirzoncic went 3 for 3. Frank Goberish, Russ Gilmore, Dave Lowitz, Carey Wasserberg and Joe Hatch all contributed two hits apiece.


Michael's 17 - A&R 14

Today at Sheafe Road, Michael's beat A&R by the score of 17-14. Stats for Michael's : Ben Anker 3-4 (5rbi), Jack Baxter 3-3 (3rs,3rbi), Mike Lynch 3-3 (2rbi), Eddie Smilkstein 2-2 (4rbi), Joe Barbarito 2-3, Stan Smilkstein 2-3, Bobby Joy 2-2 (Winning Pitcher).


Doyle's 13 - J&N 6

Excellent defense led by Mo Rugosa, Dan Doyle, Al Hicks and Dan Diesing helped Doyle's to victory. Bill Schwarze 3-4 with a triple, Dan Diesing 3-4 with a triple led Doyle's. Dan Doyle, John Latino, Rod Deloatch, Tom Giordano, Mo Ragusa, Doug McCracken and Steve Schmidt had 2 hits each.

It was a cloudy, rainy morning at Digilio when Doyle’s beat J&N by the score of 13-6. J&N took the lead 5-3, with a 5 run 4th inning, but Doyle’s came back with 5 spots of their own in both the 6th and 7th innings. Hitting stars for J&N were Jaime Pagan with 3/3 and 1 rbi, Dick Michel going 2/3 and 2 RBI’s, Joe DiChiara went 2/3, as did former URI Ram, Stan Silverman, who also went 2/3 with a home run and an rbi. Von Ahouse collected an RBI, as did Mike Spinelli 2.


Miller's 10 - Pizza Time 8

Miller's added a big win over Pizza Time 10-8. Miller's are dedicating their season to long time Miller's Manager Bob Crabtree, as he is fighting his battle with Cancer. Miller's made 2 big plays on defense as a wild throw went to the side but Joe (Pug) Pennachio backed up the play and Mike Capra covered home to nail the runner at the plate. Carlos (Cyclone) Vasquez played a great right field. With men on base, Lou Post made a spectacular Derek Jeter like foul ball catch to kill a Pizza Time rally. In the 1st inning, Tom Borell hit a 3 run homer to open the scoring. Tom ended the game 2/3 with a homer, double and walk and had 4 RBI's. Doc Willoughby had 3 hits and John Warman had 3 hits including a double. Mike Capra (winning pitcher) had a hit and walked twice. And Royal (Dewey) Bogardus kept his hot bat, going 3/3. This was a great team effort as everyone contributed in different ways. Get well soon, Bob!

A&R 15 - McHoul's 14

Today, at Sheafe Road, McHoul's prevailed in a hard-fought battle with A&R by a score of 15-14. For McHoul's, Emil Viola and Jim Kirzoncic went 4 for 4. Phil Chontos and Andy Burger went 3 for 4 with Russ Gilmore, Paul Lastowski, Lou Rosenberg and Joe Hatch contributing two hits each.


Miller's 20 - Michael's 3

At Sports Park Jr, Miller's defeated Michael's 20-3, coming up big with both their bats and their gloves. For Miller's: Mike Capra pitched awesomely, only allowing runs in 2 innings. Mike Jaffe made a diving catch down the left field line and Dan Sopchack sopped Michael's at the hot corner. Tom Borell went 4/5 with 2 over the fence doubles, Rick Willigan went 4/4 with 2 doubles, one over fence. John Warman 3/3 with 2 BB, Doc Willoughby 3/4, Frank (the Replacement), Lou Post , George Cole, Mike Capra, Joe, and Royal (Dewey) Bogardus each had 3 hits and Carlos (Cyclone) Vasquez added 2 hits.

Arlington Grill 21 - J&N 5

Arlington Bar & Grill defeated J&N 21-5. Great team defense! Jim "Doc" Ranucci, Angelo Sblendorio and Tom Mirande all had 4 hits. Mark Joao and George Norris had 3 hits. Team batting average over .600. Winning pitcher was Angelo Sblendorio.

In a game that was much closer at the beginning than the end, J&N fell to Arlington Grill today at Digilio. Somehow The Grill arranged for the incoming left field wind to stop blowing whenever their big hitters came up. A conspiracy if ever this reporter has ever seen one. Regardless, Steve Savod, Mark Battastoni, Billy Volpe, Joe DiChiara and Rick Brettholtz each had 2 hits for J&N.


Pizza Time 14 - Mountain View Ranch 13

Opening day at Whitsell for the Wednesday league, Pizza Time faces Mountain Valley Ranch. Both teams stood on each side of the field and had a moment of silence to honor the players of the past and those who passed away. Then with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, with a memorial honoring Henry Butts under the flagpole. Henry was a Vietnam veteran. After the ceremony, the game began with a bang. MVR came out of the gate and scored 5 runs. Pizza Time wouldn't give up and scored 2 runs in the bottom half of the first to cut the lead to 3. 2nd inning saw great pitching from Bert "Ron Guidry" Keating and great defensive plays by the outfield of Greg Miller, Joe Wassweiler, Reggie Dolson and Donnie Black. Bottom of the 2nd, Pizza Time scratched out a run, to cut the lead to 2 runs. Top of the 3rd, MVR pushed a run across the board and made it 6-3 going into the bottom half. Tony Janicik would start it off with a single, Frank Navarra would move the runner up, Joe Wassweiler would get on by E4, then Reggie "Roberto Clemente" Dolson would Crush a 3 run Home run over the left field fence. Then three straight hits would push across two more runs giving PT 8-6 lead heading into the 4th inning. Great defense shut down the heart of MVR's offense, led by SS Roger "Derek Jeter" Merritt, 3B Joe "Alex Rodriguez" Karam, 2B Charlie "Willie Randolph" Melia, SF Tony "Alfonso Soriano" Janicik , EH Ray "The Hitting Machine" Smith, and C Frank "Mike Piazza" Navarra. The bottom of the 4th saw PT put two more runs on the scoreboard, PT 10-6. But in the top of 5th MVR scored 4 runs to tie the game up at 10-10 heading bottom half. PT would answer right back with 2 more runs taking the lead back PT12-10. Again top of 6th, MVR came right back and took a one run lead 13-12. But once again PT answered the bell with one run to tie the score at 13-13. The top of the 7th would see one of the greatest catches by Greg "Lou Piniella" Miller, with a full out sprint down the left field line and then reached out and ended the inning. In the bottom of the 7th PT couldn't score a run because of Great Defensives Plays by John Ostuni and Lou Rossi DP. Top of the 8th saw another great outfielder catch. Joe "Hideki Matsui" Wassweiler made a sliding shoestring catch to end the 8th with an MVR runner on 3rd. Bottom of the 8th saw Greg Miller score from 3rd base on a single from Donnie "Babe Ruth" Black scoring the winning run making the score Pizza Time 14- Mountain View Ranch 13. Great Defense from Pizza Time, all around great game neither team gave up.  HITTING Joe Wassweiler 2-4 2runs,1rbi, Reggie Dolson 4-4 3runs, 4rbi's, Greg Miller 2-3 1run, 2rbi's. Roger Merritt 1-2, 1run, 1rbi. Ray Smith 1-3 1run, 1rbi. Chris "Billy Martin" Edwards 3-4 1run,1rbi. Charlie Melia 2-4 1run, 1rbi. Donnie Black 4-4 2runs, 2rbi's. Joe Karam 2-4 1run, 1rbi.
