Miller's 10 - McHoul's 8

On a beautiful morning it was the battle on the funeral homes, Miller's beating McHoul's 10-8. McHoul's opened up the scoring with 4 runs, but Miller's came back with 3 as John Warman hit a homer. Miller's later scored 5 in the 3rd to take a lead. After that both teams had goose eggs in the next 3 innings. McHoul's did tie it up in the 7th, but Miller's added 2 more runs to take the lead. Miller's was led by John Warman who had 2 doubles and a homer and played excellent defense. Tom Borell went 3/3. Dave Napolillo and Joe (Pug) Pennachio added 2 hits. J&N 22 - A&R 13

It was a game for the ages. J&N versus A&R. Two teams fighting to move up the standings ladder and stay out of the 8/9 playoff game. J&N had lost the lead in a heartbreaking defeat just the week before, playing with a skeleton crew. But now, fully staffed we were hungry and loaded for bear. A&R jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first and we were tied at 8 after 4 innings. Then J&N put together a 5 spot and we were off to the races. Like a thoroughbred racehorse, we kept speeding along, winning inning after inning and padding our lead as we sprinted past the finish line. Joe DiChiara’s pitching was controlled and precise as he kept their hitters off balance and unable to mount an attack. Our defense was outstanding and selfless. We turned several double plays, including an unusual 4-3-6 dp. Mark Battistoni played incredibly up the middle, doing his best Reed Richards impression (Fantastic Four is available at a theatre near you) by stretching his arm, hand or glove, or whatever, impossibly high and grabbing both liners and throws that had no right being caught. He even saved Stan Silverman, who ended his one game streak of not dropping a fly ball, from earning a well-deserved E11 by grabbing the expletive laden throw in and slapping the tag on the opportunistic seeking base runner at second. Tony Scaduto was no slouch either, gobbling up both ground balls as well as liners and pop ups. Bill Volpe made what might have been the play of the day with a great stop at first rolling in the dirt and trying to make the final lunge for the bag. A well-deserved team victory, with everyone hitting, fielding and running the bases. Hitting stats for J & N: George Hammer 1/3, run, Jaime Pagan 3/4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, Von Ahouse 3/4, 3 runs, rbi, Mark Battastoni 3/3, walk, triple, 3 runs, 5 RBI’s, Joe DiChiara 4/4, run, 2 RBI’s, Stan Silverman 4/4, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s, Tony Scaduto 4/4, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s, Steve Savod 3/4, triple, 2 runs, RBI, Jeff Noe 3/4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs, Rick Brettholz 2/3, run, Michael Spinelli Jr 1/3, rbi, Bill Volpe 1/3, double, 2 RBI’s,

We just ran out of magic. Imagine waking up and discovering that you could fly. You decide to fly to California to visit your old flame. So, you pack up your stuff and head to Beverly.. Hills.. that is. Swimming pools, movie stars. Well, 7/8 of the trip is fantastic. You are making great time and win or tie most every checkpoint. Pitcher Rick Brettholz is holding the rudder and keeping you out of danger. Every player is hitting and making the plays. Even that right fielder caught a ball and kept the others in front of him. In the home half of the 7th, you score 5 and have a 7-run lead. Things look great. Your cape is straight and unfurling majestically. And then the top of the eighth starts and you start to lose altitude. The ground balls get through. The tweeners tween. The fly balls fly. And the dunkers dunk. You crash. Now down by 5, you get up and jump up in the air again. You score just one. You crash.  The dust settles and you are marooned on a deserted island with 6 other people, and you are wearing a silly hat like that softball player from Boston. We just ran out of magic. Hitting stats for J & N: Stan Silverman 4/5, 3 runs, 2 rbi, Mark Battastoni 4/4, sac fly, double, 3 runs, 2 RBI’s, Jeff Noe 2/4, walk, 2 runs, 2 rbi, Von Ahouse 2/5, 2 runs, 3 RBI’s, Bill Volpe 4/5, 2 triples, 3 runs, 4 RBIs, Jaime Pagan 4/5, a run, 3 RBI’s, Mike Spinelli Jr 2/5, Dick Michel 2/4, walk, run, rbi, Tony Scaduto 3/5, double, run, rbi, Rick Brettholz 1/4, walk, 2,runs.
